For non-technical people in the electricity industry.

This course covers the elements of how the power system works, including the challenges for system operation. It is based entirely around fun demonstrations and gives participants the conceptual understanding to be conversant in the technical side of the industry. This course is a must for anyone who needs to understand the technical jargon that engineers throw around!

What does this course cover?

• About electric circuits and their role in energy transformation and transportation.
• Transmission and distribution losses and how we manage these.
• Why we use high voltage.
• Why we use Alternating Current (AC).
• How we improve and manage reliability.
• About reactive power and how we manage voltage.
• About frequency keeping and instantaneous reserve.
• Why we have meshed circuits and loop flows and how we manage these.
• How transformers work.

Course Overview

1-2 hours of preparation

Participants will be sent a small amount of preparation material – a 15 minute video and a case study that will require one to two hours of preparation time.

1 full day in-class session

With everyone up to speed on the basics, these highly interactive and stimulating sessions consist of group discussions, case studies, simulations and demonstrations delivered by our two expert industry trainers – Steve and David.
